Hurricane Helene & Milton
Tennessee, North Carolina, & Florida, USA
September 2024

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a category 4 hurricane. As it moved inland, it weakened to a post-tropical cyclone, but ended up stalling over the midwest on September 27, dumping huge amounts of rain into the region until it finally dissipated on September 29. In total, the storm is reported to have killed 252 people, and resulted in an estimated $78.8 billion in damages. In particular, Tennessee and North Carolina were left devastated in the wake of the disaster.
Within a week, IDES US Disaster coordinators were on-site, evaluating the damage, reaching out the local churches, and getting volunteer crews to help with cleanup efforts.
Currently, we are in Phase 2 of recovery efforts, meaning repairing and rebuilding homes, sometimes from the ground up! We anticipate being in the states of Appalachia for at least several more months.
UPDATE (October 9, 2024)
Hurricane Milton struck Florida on the evening of October 9, 2024. Just 2 weeks after Hurricane Helene hit the state, they face more clean up and rebuilding. These back-to-back hurricanes were devastating in several states. Our US Disaster Response team, churches, and volunteers have been on the ground since September. IDES is responding to Helene and Milton in Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina with multiple churches.
