SHED
BUILDING

Providing Security in Times of Need

Why Sheds?

A disaster strikes-- a flood, hurricane, tornado etc.— and you’re left looking at a pile of broken wood and rubble with your belongings scattered amongst them. Now what? After the initial clean up and recovery, it still might take families months to begin repairing or rebuilding their homes. And in the meantime, any belongings they managed to recover have to be shoved into the garages of friends and family, stored in expensive storage containers, or, at worst, left exposed to the elements and looters.

During the recovery from Hurricane Katrina, we realized the severity of this need and came up with a solution. Volunteers pre-assemble shed components at our headquarters in Noblesville, IN. Then, when disaster strikes, we’re able to quickly ship and build sheds, providing homeowners with safe, dry places to store their belongings.

Recovery from a disaster is always a slow process. But sheds can give homeowners a sense of safety and security as they start to put their lives back together.

Two  ways you can join us in this work:

Pre-Construction

On-Site Assembly

We welcome groups to come and serve at our headquarters to pre-construct the components of the sheds, preparing them in advance to be assembled on site where they are needed.

Your group of 4-20 people ages 12+ can serve in this capacity for either a half day (3-4 hours) or a full day (6-8 hours). The price of a half day per-person is $50, and a whole day per-person is $100. Please note that shorts or pants are appropriate attire for participating in this work, but closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Housing is available for overnight groups. Tools and PPE are provided by IDES, but your tools are also welcome.

You can reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@ides.org to discuss your needs.

After the first phase of our disaster response, IDES will work with local churches to assess if more needs to be done which could include home damage repair, home builds, and sheds.

You can get involved by going to Volunteer Opportunities and signing up to get notifications when we are looking for volunteers to serve on disaster sites. You can also connect with our Volunteer Coordinator and disaster staff to learn more about how to get plugged in and what the logistics of these projects might look like for your group!
